General Information:
- SatServ software, when used in conjunction with Hughes Network Systems "DirecPC" and "DirecDuo" families of compact satellite systems,
- provides a very high performance, yet reasonably priced LAN connectivity solution. This combination provides all LAN members with E-Mail and
- Internet access at speeds up to 400 Kb/sec.
Now there's no reason to wait weeks for that ISDN, Frame Relay, or Leased Line to be installed. In addition, there is no need to incur expensive facilities modifications to your building either. Simply install a Hughes DirecPC or DirecDuo compact satellite dish, install the SatServ software on one of your Windows 98 or Windows 95 PC workstations (it can still be used as a workstation too even with the SatServ software running), contact Hughes to turn on your system and you're in business....fast, easy, no fuss and affordable.
SatServ is a "server" type of software product that runs on any Windows 98 or Windows 95 system. The Windows 98 or Windows 95 system hosting SatServ also has a dial-up PPP or dial-up ISDN connection to a local ISP. Only one SatServ package is needed to service all the users on the LAN, regardless of the type of workstation they are using.
SatServ allows the host system to also function as a Satellite Internet Router, an Internet Firewall and an Internet E-mail Server that all users on the LAN (regardless of workstation type) can fully access and utilize. Outbound E-mail and Internet access requests by LAN members are sent out to the ISP via the dial-up connection and the incoming E-mail and responses to browser queries are downlinked via the Hughes DirecPC or DirecDuo satellite systems to the SatServ host.
The included POP3 and SMTP Internet E-mail Server modules allow all network users to send/receive local and Internet E-mail directly from their Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 3.x, Macintosh, DOS, or OS/2 workstations. The E-mail Server can download your entire domain's E-mail from the Hughes satellite directly to the SatServ host system which will then sort and distribute it to the individual users.
Security issues are not forgotten in SatServ's product features either. SatServ's included Internet Firewall protects all of your local systems from outside intrusions from the Internet and can prevent your local users from accessing areas of the Internet declared "off limits". The Firewall feature also has a work-saving administrative capability by allowing workstations with Internet "illegal" IP addresses to still access the Internet without permanently changing the existing "illegal" IP addresses. This is automatically done "on the fly" by the SatServ's Firewall. To the top
Satellite Internet Router:
- The Satellite Internet Router running on your host SatServ system connects all LAN workstations to the Internet using one standard modem or ISDN modem for all outbound information requests and E-mail. To the top
One IP Address:
- All LAN users can share one IP address. This IP address can be either dynamically or statically assigned by the local Internet Service Provider (ISP). To the top
Internet and Local E-Mail Server:
- The E-mail Server modules allows your local users to send and receive E-mail to one another on the LAN as well as to and from the Internet. In addition, the E-mail server is on their local system that is hosting SatServ permitting the user's E-mail accounts to be maintained locally instead of having to go to the ISP to add or remove users. To the top
Internet Firewall:
- The Internet Firewall protects your local systems from intrusions from the Internet and limits your locals users access to the Internet. Use of Internet"illegal" IP addresses is also permitted. To the top
Interfacing with Groupwise and other vendor's SMTP servers:
- SatServ can easily be integrated with such groupware products as Novell's Groupwise and other vendor's SMTP E-mail servers. To the top
Simultaneous Web Browsing:
- SatServ allows not just one LAN member at a time to browse the web but multiple users and simultaneously as well. To the top
Support for Internet "illegal" Internal IP Addresses:
- SatServ's Firewall allows workstations to be assigned IP addresses that are Internet "illegal" yet still allows these workstations to access the Internet. If you have an existing internal IP addressing scheme that is Internet "illegal" or want to implement quick and easy workstation IP addresses and not worry about whether or not they are Internet legal IP addresses, you'll find this a very handy feature of SatServ. To the top
E-mail CGI Scripting Interface:
- This is a very powerful feature of SatServ. The Internet E-mail Server now supports a CGI Interface to allow you to customize and add capability to your E-mail Server. The CGI Interface enables you to integrate your local databases, programs, and files into your E-mail Server. To the top
E-mail Transmission Security:
- The E-mail Server adds a new level of security into your Internet E-mail by providing point-to-point mail encryption. All E-mail traffic between two domains can be encrypted with your own set of private keys. To the top
Encrypted and Compressed Mailboxes:
- To further enhance E-mail security, and reduce system disk usage, the E-mail Server can keep your user's E-mail encrypted and/or compressed while it is stored on the server. To the top
Network Segments:
- Multiple network segments are fully supported. To the top
Clustering:
- If you have multiple independent networks there is no need for a messy satellite farm on top of your building. Simply add a DirecPC/DirecDuo interface card into the host SatServ Windows 95 system and they're connected. To the top
Aliasing:
- SatServ supports the aliasing of users, groups and domains. To the top
Compatibility:
- SatServ is compatible with virtually all vendor's modems, routers, TCP/IP stacks, TCP/IP applications (i.e. ping, telnet, etc.), web browsers and SMTP/POP3 E-mail client packages. Use the packages you enjoy and be compatible! To the top
Easy Installation:
- Installs in minutes on a single Windows 98 or Windows 95 system. (SatServ software does NOT dedicate the host platform to "SatServ-only" operations). The Windows-based installation and configuration tools allow you to install and maintain SatServ easily and directly from your Windows PC Host workstation. To the top
